Empowerment, for Samvedna Society, means putting an entitlement into somebody's hands. More than 10,000 domicile certificates have been delivered at people's doorsteps, and more than 1,000 widows, handicapped and old-age beneficiaries have been helped to obtain pension benefits from the Government — work for which the Society received an appreciation letter from the District Social Welfare Officer, Jammu.
With Mahila Shakti Kendra Jammu, the Society has run programmes making women aware of Central and State government-sponsored schemes, and has trained them in manufacturing home-made juices, sauces and pickles so that they can start their own business.
Working alongside Booth Level Officers, the Society has run voter enrolment and correction camps and delivered Voter ID cards to senior citizens and first-time voters at their doorsteps. In collaboration with the Social Welfare Department it has provided wheelchairs, hearing-aid kits and disability certificates to Divyang persons.
